Summarizer Product Line

We offer you 3 versions of Summarizer: Standard, Pro v3.5, Pro v4.0. Since Summarizer Pro v4.0 is richer in functions, we are going to dwell on it further on.

Names recognition and relations extraction.

Named Entities Recognition (NER) is a very interesting and popular trend that is successfully applied and developed by such leading IT giants as Google, Microsoft and others. Here we can see NER in a desktop application, and it is interesting from the point of view of the functionality.

For example, I found some interesting espionage news and summarized it with Intellexer Summarizer. I copied the content to the Clipboard, opened Summarizer and used the Summarize Clipboard* function.

Summarizer displayed all the names from the news (names of people, organizations, location, etc.) after I have clicked Named Entity tab.

Please, note that Named Entity uses only the first three Name groups (Person, Organization, and Location) by default. In general, Summarizer recognizes 8 types of Named Entities.

So you may choose which names you want to have in Named Entity tree. See, what happens when we expand the tree with the names.

Named Entity tree accurately collects names in name groups like Persons, Positions, Locations, etc. When opening the name groups, I see the list of all the names mentioned in the article. What is important, found Names belong to the same object are linked together and form a kind of a profile. This way, we get an outstanding opportunity to gather relevant information on the subject of interest.

Intellexer Summarizer helps to analyze the article straight away and see whether you need more profound reading!

Though, some name groups are meaningless out of the context, but such name group as Date, for example, supplements profiles and makes them more informative.

Summary will be displayed in a separate window next to Named Entity tree, including some of the most valuable sentences extracted from news. Moreover, in the application settings, you can define the length of the summary. We set the length of summary equal to 3. So, it these 3 sentences Summarizer managed to preserve the sense of the news. Summarizer Pro v4.0 advantageously differs from previous versions and it gives an opportunity to rearrange the summary by increasing the value of one or another named entity.

For example:

One summary is provided by default, but if you want to get additional information about the main hero of this news, Amir Mirzai Hekmati, you just have to select this name is Named Entity tree and click Rearrange Summary button. And here we get another version of the summary:

Default Summary Summary about Mirzai Hekmati

The US has asked Iran to free "without delay" a US man of Iranian descent described by Tehran as a CIA spy.

The report said Mr Hekmati joined the US Army in 2001 and received special training before being sent to Iran.

Iran's government has repeatedly accused the United States of carrying out covert intelligence operations in order to undermine it.

A spokeswoman for the State Department told the BBC the US had requested access to Mr Hekmati through the embassy of Switzerland, which serves as an intermediary between the countries.

On Sunday, the Iranian TV report said Mr Hekmati had come to the attention of Iranian agents at Bagram air base in Afghanistan, before he went to Iran.

The report said Mr Hekmati joined the US Army in 2001 and received special training before being sent to Iran.

Here you can see how Summarizer provided us with additional information about this person. We played with settings and named entities and found out that Summarizer is an ideal tool to:

  • Recognize names (named entities)
  • Identify relations between them
  • Visually form a kind of a profile
  • Generate names-oriented summary

Intellexer Summarizer has more interesting functions.

Subject-oriented summary

Summarizer can easily identify document type and ensure high accuracy of the summary. For example, while reading sports news you want to know who the winner of the competition is, or while analyzing marketing material you will be interested in some financial information and so on. Summarizer's work is based on the same principles: it extracts the most specific information and indentifies the article type.

For instance, Summarizer properly recognized the type of this article «House Republicans want changes to payroll tax deal» as «Politics».

When I turned off the Automatic Recognition option and changed the summary type to «Law», I got a modified summary:

Economics Politics Law

House Republicans want changes to payroll tax deal

Mr Boehner said Democrats should be willing to work until a deal had been reached

Democrats accused Mr Boehner of reneging on a deal brokered by Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell and his Democratic counterpart Harry Reid.

House Republicans want changes to payroll tax deal

With an election year looming, Democrats would renew their argument that Republicans only favor tax cuts for the wealthy.

The White House last month delayed until after next year's elections saying whether or not it would approve the Keystone XL project, amid strong objections from environmental groups and the US state of Nebraska.

House Republicans want changes to payroll tax deal

Democrats accused Mr Boehner of reneging on a deal brokered by Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell and his Democratic counterpart Harry Reid.

Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts, a Republican facing a tough battle for re-election next year, was one of the 39 members of his party that voted for the Senate bill.

In such a way, we take some advantages of changing the summary type. If you need to extract politics information from financial news or focus on Disaster theme in Ecology news, you just have to select preferable summary type and get the summary on this theme.

There are 12 summary types available to us:

Just take a look at Patents category. Summarizer features will be definitely interesting to patent attorneys and improve their work. Patent is a well-structured document, and Summarizer leverages this fact to extract the most important aspects omitting legal wording. Obviously, Summarizer is an excellent tool for patent attorneys helpful in the protection of intellectual property.

Concept Tree

Concept tree is one more interesting tool, showing the concepts extracted from the source text. Each concept is assigned to a relevance weight, taking into account different parameters as occurrence frequency in the text or topic, etc. Concept tree gives you an idea about the topic of the article.

You can easily rearrange your summary when you select the concept you want. The summary you get will contain all the information focusing on the concept you needed.

By selecting preferable concepts in Concept tree, you can highlight them and see where they appear in the summary.

Technical characteristics

In addition to intelligent features of Intellexer Summarizer, it has some usability features. For the sake of convenience, Summarizer interface is similar to MS Office 2007. So, end users will appreciate its simplicity and clearness. And you can easily customize user interface and preferences.

You can also save all summary results into History and refer to previously-saved summaries any time, find source document and copy the work results into custom reports.

Moreover, when you create subject/concept/name-oriented summary, you can save summary intermediate versions for future comparison and analysis. Here we can see Summarizer work with web pages, but it also supports such popular formats as PPT, PDF, DOCX and many more.

Summarizer is integrated with MS Outlook and MS Word and you can easily make summaries of emails, large attachments or scientific materials.

There is a special plug-in for Internet and Firefox browsers, enabling users summarize web pages on the fly.

Summarizer has an embedded function - Summarize URL. Still, the developers recommend copying the web content to the Clipboard and only then summarizing it in the program. This will ensure more accurate summarization results. The reason is that a web page contains a lot of secondary information like menus, site navigation, ads, article announcements and these can be included into the summary. So I used the Summarize Clipboard function and avoided odd data to be included into my summary.
